MOSCOW: Russian energy giant Gazprom said on Tuesday that it had made a daily record in gas supplies to China through the Power of Siberia pipeline.
The announcement came as President Vladimir Putin hosts Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for a second day, with both expected to ink agreements including economic integration.
The company said in a statement that on 20 March, China’s request for the supplies of Russian gas via the Power of Siberia pipeline considerably exceeded the existing daily contractual obligations.
The statement added that Gazprom delivered the requested volumes of gas and set a new record for daily supplies to China.
Gazprom declines to comment on total gas supply
Gazprom declined to comment to AFP on the gas volumes, describing the figures as closed commercial data.
China has emerged as an important economic partner for Russia since the West imposed more sanctions on Moscow for its aggression against Ukraine launched last year.
The economic pivot to China has been a blessing for Russia, as Moscow was deprived of much of its market share in Europe after the conflict intensified.
Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that shipment via the Power of Siberia pipeline reached an all-time high of 15.5 billion cubic meters in total in 2022. – AFP
