MOSCOW: A Russian warplane accidentally bombed the city of Belgorod near the border with Ukraine late on Thursday, causing an explosion and injuring three people, the defence ministry in Moscow has said.

Regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said the blast left about a 20-metre (60 ft) wide crater in the city centre.

Three people were wounded and several buildings were damaged, he said. One apartment block was also evacuated.

Two women injured in the bombing were taken to hospital for treatment while a nine-storey apartment building was evacuated because of potential structural damage, Gladkov said.

A Sukhoi-34 supersonic fighter jet accidentally released the bomb at 22:15 local time (19:15 GMT) on Thursday, Russian defence ministry said.

There was no explanation for the bombing except for what it described as an “abnormal descent of aviation ammunition”.

The bomb hit an intersection of two roads not far from the city centre and close to residential buildings.

An investigation is under way into the incident.

Video footage from the site showed piles of concrete on the street, several damaged cars and a building with broken windows. One shot showed what appeared to be a car upside down on the roof of a store.

Belgorod – a city of 370,000 population – is around 25 miles (40 km) from the Ukrainian border and lies just north of Ukraine’s second city, Kharkiv. Residents over there have been living in fear of Ukrainian shelling since Russia invaded Ukraine last year.

Russian warplanes also regularly fly over the city on their way to Ukraine.
