KYIV: A Russian strike on Friday killed two women and injured eight others in the city of Sumy, located in northeast Ukraine. Sumy is near the border with Russia’s Kursk region, which was targeted by a Ukrainian offensive on August 6 aimed at establishing a “buffer zone” in Russian territory.
The strike in Sumy resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman, whose body was found under the rubble, and a 48-year-old woman who died in the hospital from her injuries. The attack also ignited a fire and wounded eight other people.
In separate incidents, Russian shelling in the Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Kharkiv regions caused further casualties. In Kharkiv, shelling wounded a man and three women, damaging homes and vehicles. In Dnipropetrovsk, three women were injured by artillery fire that also affected houses and a power line. Additionally, a man in Kherson was hospitalized with head injuries following shelling.
Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk reported that Ukrainian forces shot down 12 Shahed drones overnight from Thursday to Friday, with four additional drones crashing before reaching their targets.
Meanwhile, Russian forces have made advances in eastern Ukraine, with Russia claiming control over two more villages in the region as of Thursday.
