KYIV: Russian missile strikes on Wednesday killed two people in the city of Zaporizhzhia in south eastern Ukraine, Western media reported.
Regional governor Yuriy Malashko in a statement said Russia carried out 6 missile attacks on Zaporizhzhia city between 1:33 am and 1:48 am local time.
Police said that one of the missiles had hit a building killing two people while injuring three others.
Missiles hit residential building
Emergency services said that it was a residential building, and the attack destroyed three to five storeys.
Ukrainian officials were still working to identify the type of missile used in the strike.
Europe’s largest nuclear power plant is located in the area about 50 kilometres from the city of Zaporizhzhia, at Energodar. It is being controlled by Russian forces.
The development comes a day after day after Ukraine announced that it had used US long-range ATACMS missiles against Russia for the first time.
The Ukrainian authorities said that the missiles targeted airfields in Russian-held territory.
The White House has also confirmed the supply of the missiles for the first time. In a statement, National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said that they believed these ATACMS missiles would give an important boost to Ukraine’s battleground abilities without risking their (US) army readiness.
