MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday hailed deepening military relations with Beijing during a meeting with a senior Chinese general in Moscow.
In the past year, Russia has been actively enhancing its ties with its Chinese neighbor as it seeks to form alliances while dealing with its ongoing military operations in Ukraine.
During the meeting with Zhang Youxia, a high-ranking general and vice chairman of Beijing’s Central Military Commission, Putin emphasized the growing importance of their interactions in the military and military technology sectors.
In televised statements, President Putin clarified that Moscow and Beijing were not in the process of building a “military alliance” in a Cold War fashion. Instead, their cooperation plays a crucial role in stabilizing the global situation.

He noted the increasing American military presence in the Asia-Pacific region and highlighted that both Russia and China would respond calmly and carefully by reinforcing their defense capabilities.
Before the meeting, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu extended a warm welcome to Zhang and a delegation from the Chinese military during a red-carpet ceremony in the Russian capital.
Zhang conveyed his intentions to President Putin, expressing his purpose of further strengthening military-technical cooperation, as interpreted from the broadcast on Russian state TV.
