KYIV: At least one person was killed in an overnight missile strike launched by Russian forces on port infrastructure in Ukraine’s Odesa region along the Black Sea coast, the regional governor reported on Thursday.
Oleg Kiper, the governor of Odesa region, revealed that Russian forces fired Kalibr missiles from a submarine in the Black Sea during the attack. The strike claimed the life of a civilian guard born in 1979, and caused significant damage to the cargo terminal’s equipment, a small security building, and two cars.
This escalation in attacks on the Odesa region comes in the wake of Russia’s decision earlier this month to withdraw from a landmark deal that had facilitated the safe shipment of Ukrainian grain from Black Sea ports.
Russian Overnight Assault on Ukraine
Furthermore, the Ukrainian Air Force disclosed that Russia not only launched two Kalibr missiles but also deployed eight Iranian-made Shahed drones during the overnight assault on Ukraine. The Kalibr missiles targeted the port infrastructure in the Odesa region and proved difficult to intercept.
However, the Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed all eight drones over various regions, including the western Khmelnytsky, eastern Donetsk, and central Dnipropetrovsk regions. Most of the drones were aimed at the Starokostiantyniv air base in the Khmelnytsky region, situated far from the frontline. Ukraine’s air force spokesman, Yuri Ignat, confirmed that the same site had been targeted the day before as well.
Additionally, an unrelated strike in the eastern Kharkiv region resulted in the death of one person. The town of Kivsharivka experienced an impact near a five-story residential building, which caused damage to the structure, including the collapse of a wall in one of the apartments. A 74-year-old woman lost her life in the incident, and four others were injured.
