MOSCOW:  A Russian General has survived an assassination attempt in Moscow on Friday, Russian Investigative Committee Spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko said.

Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, was shot and shifted to a hospital in northwestern Moscow.

Investigators said an unidentified gunman opened fire on the general inside a residential building on Volokolamskoye Highway before fleeing the scene.

The Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation based on the Russian Criminal Code.

Alexeyev is the deputy head of the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence, while his chief, Igor Kostyukov, has been leading Russia’s delegation in Abu Dhabi talks with Ukraine on security-related elements of a possible peace deal.

Several senior Russian officers have been assassinated since the start of the war in Ukraine, with Moscow attributing the attacks to Kyiv. In some instances, Ukrainian military intelligence has claimed responsibility.

Since December 2024, three other officials holding the same rank as Alexeyev—lieutenant general—have been killed in or around Moscow.

One of them, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the General Staff’s army training directorate, was killed on December 22 when a bomb planted under his car detonated.
