In a statement, Russian Investigative Committee said a murder investigation has been started and that officials would probe the matter from all aspects. Local media reported that the former officer was shot in the chest and in the back by an unidentified armed man when he was taking his morning jog in a park in the city.

BBC reported that the official personal details and address had also been uploaded to the Ukrainian website known as Myrotvorets, an unofficial database of persons considered to be enemies of Kyiv.

Anton Gerashchenko, a Ukrainian Interior Ministry adviser, said that Russian media were accusing Kyiv of involvement but he did not say whether or not that suspicion was justified.

Captain Stanislav Rzhitsky reportedly commanded the Krasnodar submarine in the Russian Navy.
