UNITED NATIONS: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday warned European countries against seeking confrontation with Moscow, saying it would be a “suicidal escapade” as Russia’s war with Ukraine grinds on.
During his address at the UN General Assembly, Lavrov strongly criticized Western countries for supporting Ukraine and warned against “dragging Ukraine into NATO.”
“The West hopes to defeat Russia using the illegitimate neo-Nazi Kyiv regime,” Lavrov claimed, referring to the Ukrainian government, “but they are already preparing Europe for it to also throw itself into this suicidal escapade.”
Lavrov’s fiery rhetoric hinted at the consequences of a direct military confrontation with Russia, a nuclear power. “I’m not going to talk here about the senselessness and danger of the very idea of trying to fight to victory with a nuclear power,” he added ominously.
The Russian foreign minister accused the West of violating the rights of Russians and those “who feel they are part of Russian culture,” suggesting that these actions posed serious security risks to both Russia and Europe.
Lavrov expressed concern over the growing involvement of Western nations in supporting Ukraine, particularly NATO’s engagement with the conflict.
“Gross violations of the rights of Russians… bring with them threats to the security of Russia and all of Europe,” Lavrov said, directing his comments at countries that support Ukraine’s aspirations to join the Western military alliance.
