MOSCOW: The Russian Defence Ministry announced on Monday that two Russian Su-27 fighter jets intercepted three British military aircraft as they approached the Russian border over the Black Sea.

The Russian ministry stated that the intercepted planes included an RC-135 reconnaissance and electronic warfare aircraft, along with two Typhoon fighter jets. When the Russian fighters approached the foreign military aircraft, they turned back from the Russian Federation’s state border, ensuring no violation occurred.

The Russian planes safely returned to their airfield, and the ministry emphasized that there was no breach of the Russian border. However, incidents involving Russian and Western aircraft have been on the rise in the Black Sea and Baltic Sea regions in recent months, coinciding with Russia’s ongoing offensive in Ukraine.

Russian Jets Intercepted US Strategic Bombers in May

In May, Moscow reported intercepting four American strategic bombers on separate occasions within a week above the Baltic Sea. Additionally, Russia scrambled warplanes to intercept aircraft from France, Germany, and Poland. In a separate incident in April, an American Reaper MQ-9 military drone crashed in the Black Sea following a confrontation attributed by Washington to two Russian fighter jets.

The repeated encounters between Russian and Western military aircraft highlight the escalating tensions in the region. As Moscow continues its offensive in Ukraine, such incidents have become more frequent.
