MOSCOW: Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has arrived in Iran for a series of meetings aimed at bolstering Moscow’s defence cooperation with Tehran, as part of Russia’s efforts to strengthen alliances with nations facing Western isolation.
The visit comes amidst a period of diplomatic activity, with China’s foreign minister visiting Moscow recently, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un conducting a several-day visit to Russia’s Far East.

During Shoigu’s visit to Iran, the Russian defence ministry delegation is scheduled to engage in discussions with Iran’s military leadership. The Russian defence ministry, in a statement carried by Russian news agencies, highlighted the visit’s significance in strengthening Russian-Iranian military ties and the broader development of cooperation between the two nations.
Moscow has been actively seeking to fortify its alliances with countries that have faced isolation or sanctions from Western powers. Iran, in particular, has played a significant role in this strategy.
