ISLAMABAD: On charges of spreading “false information” regarding Moscow’s special operation in Ukraine, a Russian court, on Wednesday, handed an eight-year prison term to exiled veteran journalist Alexander Nevzorov.

Sixty-four-year-old Nevzorov, 64, has come under pressure from authorities for claiming that Russian forces intentionally shelled a maternity hospital in Ukraine’s southern port city of Mariupol. Following a long siege, the city was captured by Moscow.

Prosecution lawyers had sought a term of nine years in jail.

Exiled Nevzorov did not attend hearings

Nevzorov has left Russia and did not attend the hearings.

The probe was launched in March last year, with the authorities claiming Nevzorov had intentionally published information that was misleading, with photographs of shell-affected civilians that were not accurate.
