MOSCOW: Russia has warned Japan that its decision to supply Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine will have ‘grave consequences’ for the already strained Russia-Japan relations.
Tensions between Moscow and Tokyo escalated significantly following Russia’s deployment of tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022, prompting Japan to align with Western allies in imposing substantial economic sanctions on Russia.
Last week, Japan announced its intention to send Patriot air defense missiles to the United States after revising its arms export guidelines. This marks Tokyo’s first major revision of export curbs in nine years. Although Japan’s updated export controls continue to prohibit the shipment of weapons to countries involved in active conflicts, the move indirectly enhances the United States’ capacity to provide military support to Ukraine.
Russia Expresses Concern Over Japan’s Plan
The Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed concerns, stating, “The Japanese side loses control over the weapons with which Washington can now do whatever it wants.” She added that there is a possibility, using a familiar method, that Patriot missiles could find their way to Ukraine. Any such scenario would be viewed as “unambiguously hostile actions against Russia” and would result in serious repercussions for Japan in the context of bilateral relations, she warned.
Prior to the conflict in Ukraine, Russia and Japan were grappling with the longstanding issue of a formal treaty to end hostilities from World War II. This unresolved matter revolves around a territorial dispute concerning a chain of Pacific islands referred to as the Northern Territories in Japan and the Southern Kuriles in Russia.
Even before the Ukraine conflict, Japan had expressed dissatisfaction with increased Russian military deployments on these islands, which the Soviet Union had seized from Japan at the conclusion of World War II.
