MOSCOW: The Kremlin announced on Monday that Russia would “develop” its military installations in Kyrgyzstan, its Central Asian ally, following talks between the leaders of both countries in Moscow.
The statement highlighted the importance of strengthening the armed forces of the Kyrgyz Republic and expanding Russian military facilities on Kyrgyz territory.
Kyrgyzstan, a predominantly Muslim country with a population of nearly seven million, currently hosts a Russian military base consisting of an airfield, a naval installation on Lake Issyk-Kul, and several other sites.
President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday, a day before Victory Day, a significant Soviet war anniversary that will be celebrated with an army parade through Red Square.
The bilateral relations between Russia and Kyrgyzstan are reinforced through the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a Moscow-led military alliance comprising several ex-Soviet republics.
The Kremlin’s statement also outlined the intention to “deepen military and technical cooperation” between the two countries, as well as enhance economic and cultural ties to achieve a new level of integration.
