KYIV: Ukrainian officials revealed on Wednesday that Russian forces have once again launched airstrikes on the Odesa region in southern Ukraine, intensifying the ongoing conflict.
Oleh Kiper, the regional governor, issued an urgent plea for residents to seek shelter while announcing the activation of air defence systems in an effort to repel the attacks.
This series of airstrikes followed the previous night’s bombardment, which targeted both Odesa and the nearby city of Mykolaiv. Russia claims that these actions are in direct response to an attack on Monday, which resulted in significant damage to a crucial bridge linking Russia to the Crimean Peninsula. The bridge serves as a vital supply route for Russian forces engaged in their unlawful invasion of Ukraine, according to VoA.
The Russian defence ministry issued a statement on Tuesday, justifying its airstrikes by alleging that it targeted facilities associated with “terrorist acts” perpetrated by seaborne drones. These facilities reportedly included a shipyard located near Odesa and Ukrainian fuel depots.
Of particular concern is the impact these attacks may have on the Odesa region, which houses multiple ports that were once integral to the Black Sea Grain Initiative. This initiative, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, played a pivotal role in facilitating the export of Ukrainian grain to the global market. Regrettably, Russia withdrew from this agreement earlier this week, further complicating the already strained relationship between the two nations.
As tensions continue to escalate and the situation remains volatile, the international community must closely monitor the developments in the Odesa region. The recurring airstrikes not only endanger the lives of innocent civilians but also jeopardize vital infrastructure and economic stability. Swift and decisive action is required to restore peace to the region.
