MOSCOW: Russia said on Tuesday it was awaiting clarification from the United States over reports of a possible supply of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, warning that the weapons are capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he wants to know what Ukraine planned to do with Tomahawks before approving their delivery, stressing that he does not want to further escalate the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Reuters news agency reported.

He added that he had “sort of made a decision” on the issue.

In response to Trump’s remarks, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “We understand that we probably need to wait for more definitive statements, if any are made.”

Peskov also noted that under Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, the US typically confirmed new arms shipments to Ukraine only after the weapons had already been delivered.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned in comments published on Sunday that any decision by Washington to supply Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine for long-range strikes inside Russia would lead to the collapse of Moscow’s relations with the United States.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, “If we set aside the various nuances, we are talking about missiles that could potentially be nuclear-capable. This marks a serious step toward escalation.”

With a range of 2,500 kilometers, Tomahawk missiles would enable Ukraine to target locations deep within European Russia—including Moscow—if President Donald Trump approves their transfer.
