MOSCOW: The Russian defence ministry reported on Friday that it had successfully intercepted 53 Ukrainian drones, the majority of which were aimed at the southern Rostov region, home to Moscow’s Ukraine campaign headquarters.

The ministry stated that these drones were part of attempted terrorist attacks orchestrated by the Kyiv regime, but they were thwarted before causing any harm. Of the 53 drones, 44 were either downed or intercepted in the Rostov region, with the remaining ones targeting areas such as Kursk, Belgorod, and Krasnodar.

Rostov-on-Don, the primary city in the Rostov region, hosts the military headquarters overseeing Russia’s Ukraine campaign, initiated in February 2022. This strategic location makes it a prime target for such attacks. Additionally, the ministry mentioned previous incidents involving the Wagner mercenary group, which briefly seized control of the Ukraine campaign headquarters in Rostov-on-Don in June of the preceding year before their mutiny was quelled.

The successful interception of these drones underscores Russia’s ongoing efforts to counter perceived threats to its operations in Ukraine. The incident highlights the complex and dynamic nature of the conflict, with both sides employing various tactics to gain strategic advantage.
