KYIV: Ukrainian officials said that Russia launched a coordinated assault on Ukraine overnight, unleashing a total of 100 missiles and drones targeting energy sites across the country.
Russia has launched dozens of airstrikes at Ukraine’s power facilities over the past two-year war. Despite Ukraine’s efforts, their air defenses have struggled to repel the onslaught of drones and missiles.
According to the Ukrainian air force, the enemy deployed 53 missiles and 47 attack drones in the assault. However, they managed to intercept 35 of the missiles and all but one of the drones.
The attack resulted in significant damage to two thermal power plants operated by DTEK, though their exact locations were not disclosed. This latest assault adds to the six major attacks on DTEK thermal power plants since mid-March.
The targets of the attack spanned across five regions of Ukraine, from the eastern frontlines to the western border with the EU. As a consequence, the Ministry of Energy warned of potential power restrictions later that evening.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, accusing Russia of exploiting the perceived lack of determination among Ukraine’s Western allies. He reiterated the urgent need for additional air defense systems to counter such threats.
In response, Russia’s defense ministry described the strikes as a “group strike” using long-range precision weapons aimed at Ukrainian energy facilities supporting military-industrial complex enterprises.
It framed the attacks as a response to alleged attempts by Ukraine to damage Russian energy and transport infrastructure.
