Russia has Sentenced Over 200 Captured Ukrainians So Far: Russian FM

MOSCOW: Russian courts have awarded sentences to over 200 Ukrainian fighters to prison terms since Russia started its military offensive in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Sunday.

In an interview with RIA, top diplomat of Russia said that Russian courts have sentenced over 200 representatives of armed formations of Ukraine to long terms of imprisonment for carrying out atrocities. Moscow and Kyiv accuse each other of carrying out atrocities in the war in Ukraine since February 2022.

The United Nations (UN) has found constant evidence of war crimes and violations of human rights committed by Russians, including rape, torture, and the deportation of kids.

Earlier, in March, the International Criminal Court (ICC) had issued an arrest warrant for Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, alleging his government for forcible deportation of children from Ukraine is a war crime.

According to Reuters, the Ukraine Prosecutor General’s office said that it has registered over 121,000 Russian crimes of hostility and war crimes since 2022.

The United Nations has found several cases of Ukrainian officials committing human rights violations against the people they have alleged of collaborating with Russians in the region.

Lavrov said that Russia’s Investigative Committee, has also initiated around 4,000 criminal cases against around 900 Ukrainians.  He added that they include not only people linked with radical nationalist associations, members of Ukrainian security troops and mercenaries, but also military personal and political leaders of Ukraine.

He further said that those of them who were charged in absentia have been put on the global wanted list.

His remarks come as Russian officials said earlier that in Belgorod region, the number of deaths is up to 20,”, saying that around 111 people have been injured in the strike.
