ISLAMABAD/KYIV: Russian forces fired over 70 missiles at Ukraine on Friday in the latest and one of its heaviest attacks since the start of the war.

The missiles hit electricity infrastructure, knocking out power in Kyive, the second-biggest city, forcing authorities to implement blackout emergency across the country.

Three killed in the latest fire

Ukrainian officials said that at three people were killed after a latest missile hit an apartment block in central Kryvyi Rih while another died in shelling in Kherson in the south.

They said that Russian-installed officials in occupied eastern Ukraine confirmed the death of at least 12 people in the Russian shelling, according to Reuters.

In a video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Russia could have more missiles for several more massive strikes, urging his western allies to supply Kyiv with more and better air defence systems.

President Zelenskiy said that Ukraine was strong enough to retaliate in the face of a barrage of missile attacks from Russia.

Earlier on Thursday, Kyiv said Moscow was planning a new all-out offensive in the coming days after its February 24 invasion, which shattered wide areas of Ukraine after missiles and artillery shells were fired.

Russia has bombarded Ukrainian energy infrastructure with a barrage of missiles since early October after several battlefield defeats, but Friday’s attack aimed to inflict more damage than many others.

Earlier, after some repair works, Ukrainian grid operator Ukrenergo lifted an emergency that forced it to impose total blackouts. Ukrenergo has also warned that more time would be required to repair infrastructure and restore electricity.
