MOSCOW: Russia said its forces shot down three missiles over the southern border region of Belgorod, the latest spillover of fighting from Ukraine.

“Our air defence system shot down three missiles over Belgorod and the Belgorodsky district. Debris hit Belgorod’s residential sector. There is damage,” Belgorod governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said in a statement late Tuesday.

Belgorod Mayor Valentin Demidov said nine homes and four apartment buildings had been damaged by debris but added that no one had been hurt.

Gladkov has regularly accused Ukrainian forces of shelling his border region. In January, he said more than two dozen residents had been killed since the Kremlin’s military intervention in Ukraine on February 24 last year.

Ukraine conflict occasionally spills into Russia

On Monday, he said that Russian air defences had downed four missiles but that no one was hurt.

The conflict in Ukraine occasionally spills over into Russia, including earlier this month when Moscow said it was forced to respond when a group of Ukrainian saboteurs breached the frontier of the southern Bryansk region.
