MOSCOW: Russia said Friday it had destroyed 16 Ukrainian drones in the south of the country and over the annexed Crimean Peninsula.
Russia’s defence ministry said that on Thursday night, an attempt by Ukraine to carry out a terrorist attack using aerial drones against sites on the Russia territory was thwarted.
It said that air defence systems destroyed sixteen drones, including thirteen over the Crimean Peninsula and 3 over the territory of the Volgograd region, according to AFP.
Ukraine’s ramped up attacks
Ukraine has ramped up missile and drone attacks on Russian military installations in and around the peninsula in recent months.
Crimea — annexed by Russia in 2014 — serves as the rear base for the Black Sea Fleet and important supply route for Russian troops in southern and eastern Ukraine.
Ukraine’s forces meanwhile said its air defence systems had downed 3 Iranian-designed attack drones launched by Russian forces overnight.
They also said Moscow had launched two guided air missiles but did not provide details.
