Russia, China to Hold Joint Naval Exercises Amid Growing Defence Ties

MOSCOW: Russia announced Monday that several of its warships were participating in naval exercises launching this week with the Chinese Navy as Moscow and Beijing deepen relations amid pressure from the West.

The Russian Ministry of Defence said that exercises would run from 21 to 27 December in the East China Sea to consolidate naval cooperation between the two countries, an Indian television news channel reported.    

The drills include the live firing of missiles, exercises to counter submarines, and artillery firing.

Defence cooperation

According to the statement released by the Russian Defence Ministry, the main aim of the joint exercises is to strengthen the cooperation between Moscow and Beijing and maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.  

The statement said China would incorporate patrol ships, two destroyers, a submarine, and a supply ship.
