MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday to organize an international conference aimed at finding a lasting and just solution to the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
Moscow, advocating for the creation of a Palestinian state, emphasized the need for a comprehensive dialogue involving all five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Lavrov proposed that the conference should include representatives from the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), emphasizing the crucial role the UN should play in convening such a forum.
Russia, as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, along with China, France, the UK, and the US, seeks a collaborative effort to address the longstanding tensions in the region.
“The only way for this problem to be solved forever, and to be solved in a just way, is to hold an international conference with all five permanent members of the UN Security Council,” Lavrov stated during discussions with Russian senators.
Russian FM Highlights Ongoing Injustices Against Palestinian People
Lavrov highlighted the impact of ongoing injustices against the Palestinian people, emphasizing that the unfulfilled promise of a Palestinian state contributes to serious sentiments. The Russian foreign minister expressed Moscow’s commitment to working towards the release of hostages taken by Hamas during its unprecedented attack on Israel in October.
Russia’s stance on the Israel-Palestinian conflict has intensified, with President Vladimir Putin previously denouncing the “catastrophic” humanitarian situation resulting from Israel’s military operation in Gaza. The conflict, which began on October 7, has led to significant casualties, with the health ministry reporting over 18,400 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children.
