Ruling Party Dominates Elections in Azerbaijan

BAKU: Azerbaijan’s ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) won parliamentary polls held on Sunday, local media reported.  Central Election Commission Chairman Mezahir Panahov has announced the names of the candidates who have received the most votes at a news conference.  As per the the initial results, YAP, led by President Ilham Aliyev, won around 68 seats in the National Assembly of the central Asian country.

A total of 44 independent candidates were elected as members of the country’s parliament, while the Civic Solidarity Party won 3 seats, the Justice, Law and Democracy Party won 2 seats and the Great Azerbaijan Party, Democratic Reforms Party, Republican Alternative Party, Great Creation Party, Azerbaijan National Independence Party, Motherland Party, Azerbaijan Democratic Enlightenment Party and National Front Party each won one seat. In a nation with approximately 6,421,000 registered voters, the voter turnout was around 37.27 percent.

The people of Azerbaijan went to the elections for the seventh time to elect members of the National Assembly. Around 990 candidates contested for 125 seats.
