Ruling Coalition Consults Legal Experts for Delay in Elections

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), the ruling coalition parties alliance, held a consultation with legal experts to delay general elections.

As per the details, the PDM parties are exploring different options to find a legal way to postpone the general elections.

PDM has asked the legal experts about how the federal government can extend the caretaker government in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

Legal experts’ opinion over delay in elections

Articles 232 and 158 of the constitution are initially suggested to the PDM alliance for postponing general elections. They advised proposing more legal options.

Earlier, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif constituted a 32-member parliamentary committee ahead of the elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

Sources privy to the development said that Nawaz Sharif will head the parliamentary board, and Shehbaz Sharif will be part of the board.

PML-N senior vice president Maryam Nawaz, Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Asif, Rana Sanaullah, Main Javaid Lateef, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and Sardar Ayaz Sadiq will be part of the parliamentary board.

It is pertinent to mention that the federal government provided Rs18 billion to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the next general elections in the country.

The ECP demanded Rs57 billion from the federal government for the upcoming general elections. Of this amount, Rs27 billion will be received in the current financial year.
