LONDON: The British royal family opens up about King Charles, Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis in latest statement, detailing their temporary withdrawal from public duties to prioritize treatment and recovery.
The revelation came as part of the Royal Household’s annual financial statement, the Sovereign Grant Report, which covers the fiscal year 2023-24 and provides insights into the funding allocated to support the official responsibilities of the Sovereign and maintain the Occupied Royal Palaces.
Describing the past year as marked by “unforeseen challenges for the Royal Family,” the palace statement underscored the personal health struggles faced by both King Charles and his daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton.
King Charles, who ascended to the throne following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, and Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, were diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. The news prompted them to temporarily step back from their public-facing duties to focus on their respective treatments and paths to recovery.
The statement did not specify the types of cancer diagnosed or the exact nature of their treatments, respecting the privacy of the royal family members. However, it emphasized the royal family’s commitment to transparency amid significant personal challenges.

Despite their health battles, Kate Middleton recently made a notable public appearance at the Wimbledon final on July 14, reflecting her ongoing engagement with royal duties when possible.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry’s announcement regarding the 2027 Invictus Games being held in the UK has added a layer of complexity to familial relations. The event, a significant initiative founded by Prince Harry to honor wounded veterans through adaptive sports, could potentially serve as a platform for reconciliation within the family.
However, the announcement has also placed Prince William and Kate Middleton in what royal commentators describe as an “awkward position.” Not attending the Invictus Games could risk public perception of coldness towards Prince Harry, who has expressed hopes for reconciliation with his immediate family.
Royal commentator Dorothy Reddin highlighted the delicate balance the royal family must strike in navigating these familial dynamics amidst public scrutiny. She noted that attending the 2027 Invictus Games could present both challenges and opportunities for emotional reconciliation between Prince Harry and his relatives.
