RIYADH: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) made history on Sunday as its first woman astronaut, Rayyanah Barnawi, and her colleague Ali Al-Qarni launched toward the International Space Station (ISS). They were on board the Axiom Space 2 mission, which launched at 5:37 p.m. (EDT time). The space mission to the ISS launched Sunday carrying a Saudi woman and man, the first citizens from their nation to fly to space. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket thundered into the sky from Kennedy Space Center on Florida’s east coast on a space mission planned by Axiom Space Company.

AFP reported that two Saudis astronauts Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali Al-Qarni are accompanied by two other crew members, including former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson and American businessman John Shoffner. The space flight was a great success when they took off on board the dreams of the entire Saudi nation and their proud families. Al Qarni and Barnawi were seen smiling and waving while heading to the Dragon spacecraft before their launch of the space journey. Ten minutes before the launch of the mission, the final ‘go’ was given, with NASA saying: “Let Freedom fly.”
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman followed up devotedly on the launch of the Saudi astronauts’ journey to space. Saudi Communications and IT Minister and Deputy Chief of the Supreme Space Council Abdullah Al-Sawha and Saudi Envoy to the US Princess Reema bint Bandar witnessed the launch of the space rocket from Kennedy Space Center.

Before the launch, Rayyanah Barnawi, a breast cancer researcher, expressed her excitement and honor at representing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the Saudi Space Commission as the nation’s first woman astronaut. Rayyanah Barnawi highlighted her passion for research and termed the opportunity as a great dream come true for everyone involved in the efforts. Al Qarni added that It was a big opportunity for him to pursue such a passion in order to fly among the stars. He added that he wanted to explore the unknown world.
During their eight-day stay at International Space Station, Shoffner, Whitson, Al-Qarni, and Barnawi aim to conduct twenty research projects. Among them are fourteen projects developed by Saudi scientists, covering several sectors such as cell biology, human physiology, and technology development. The Dragon spacecraft will travel for sixteen hours to the International Space Station, with arrival expected at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. They will join fellow Arab astronaut, the UAE’s Sultan Al-Neyadi, presently on the International Space Station for a 6-month mission. Hours before the launch of the rocket, Al-Neyadi also sent a good-luck message to Saudi Astronauts on his Twitter account. According to the Saudi Press Agency, Saudi male and female students will also participate in scientific experiments conducted on the International Space Station. On Saturday, astronaut Al-Qarni also shared pictures on his social media account of the contents of his space travel bag.

It is the same site where the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s first astronaut, Prince Sultan bin Salman, soared in 1985. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia developed the Saudi Space Commission in 2018 and initiated a program last year in order to send astronauts into space. The four-member team is set to conduct some twenty experiments while on the International Space Station. They will join seven others already on board the International Space Station: three Americans, three Russians, and UAE astronaut Sultan Al-Neyadi.
