RIYADH: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) welcomes the decision by Bahrain and Qatar to restore diplomatic relations between the two nations, Riyadh said on Thursday. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it commended the positive development and said it confirmed the strength of ties between GCC nations.

It maintained that the step would also contribute to further strengthening combined Gulf action in a way that achieves the aspirations of Arab countries and people in the middle east.

Earlier, Bahraini-Qatari Follow-up Committee agreed that the two sides would resume their diplomatic ties. The Qatari foreign ministry said on Wednesday that Bahrain and Qatar would restore their diplomatic relations. The development comes after two years following an Arab boycott of Qatar was lifted.

Bahrain-Qatar ties

Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain in January 2021 ended an embargo of Doha, but Bahrain restored trade links in 2021. The two countries said in separate messages that Qatar and Bahrain took the decision to restore diplomatic ties during a meeting of the Bahraini-Qatari Follow-up Committee on Wednesday.

In January, the crown prince of Bahrain also spoke with the Emir of Qatar by phone, hinting that the two nations were moving toward repairing their ties.
