WASHINGTON: Retired US police chief Alan Hostetter, 59, has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for his involvement in the assault on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Convicted of four felonies, including conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding and disorderly conduct in a restricted building with a deadly weapon, Hostetter received a jail term only slightly less than the 12.5 years sought by prosecutors.

The assault on the Capitol took place when hundreds of Trump supporters attempted to disrupt the official certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. Hostetter, who staunchly maintained the belief that Biden had stolen the election from Trump, defended himself during the court proceedings.

This sentencing adds to the ongoing legal actions related to the Capitol riot. Over 1,230 individuals have been charged, with more than 720 convictions and over 450 resulting in prison time. Notably, former President Donald Trump, though not directly implicated, faces legal challenges, including a congressional commission recommending criminal charges for aiding an insurrection and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Trump is set to go on trial in March in Washington for these charges, and he also faces a racketeering indictment in Georgia for attempting to overturn the 2020 election results in that state.
