ISLAMABAD: Efforts are underway to preserve, restore, and develop the historical Rawat Fort, an ancient Sarai situated along the G.T Road.
The Department of Archaeology and Museum (DOAM) official informed that the ongoing work aims not only to halt the fort’s decay but also to safeguard its heritage for future generations, while simultaneously boosting tourism at both national and regional levels.
Highlighting the inclusive nature of the project, the official emphasized that archaeological excavation, conservation, and restoration activities would create employment opportunities in the local area.
Dating back to the Sultanate period in the early 15th century A.D., Rawat Fort holds immense historical significance. Associated with legends of Mahmud of Ghazna’s son Masud and the brave Ghakhar Chief Sarang Khan, the fortress is steeped in tales of valor and conquest.
The fort currently features two gateways on its northern and eastern sides, a three-domed Mosque at the heart of the Western Wing, and an octagonal single-domed Mausoleum in the North-Western corner. Scattered graves within its precinct serve as reminders of bygone eras.
The quadrangular inner face of the defense walls boasts majestic rows of identical living cells, overlooking the courtyard and showcasing the architectural marvels of the fort’s rich history.
As restoration work progresses, Rawat Fort stands poised to reclaim its former glory, serving as a testament to the region’s cultural heritage and attracting visitors from far and wide to witness its timeless grandeur.
