Republican Lawmakers Reject Own Funding Bill, US Govt Shutdown Looming

WASHINGTON: Hardline Republican lawmakers in the US House of Representatives on Friday dismissed a bill suggested by their leader to provisionally fund the government, making it all but sure that federal agencies will partially shut down commencement on Sunday.

In a 232-198 vote, the US House of Representatives defeated a measure that would extend government funding by 30 days and avoid a shutdown. That funding bill would have cut financial spending and also imposed border security and immigration restrictions, Republican priorities that had very little chance of passing the Senate.

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told the media that it was not the end yet, I have got other ideas but refused to say what those ideas were.

Earlier, the White House said that it was still possible to avert a government shutdown, but that it was up to hardline Republican legislators to end the stalemate, Western media reported on Friday.

Director of Office of Management and Budget Shalanda Young told the media that there was still a chance to address the issue. She hoped that they have a day and a half to work over the matter to resolve the issue. She said that what is required to take the deal” that Republican legislators in the House of Representatives have been offered by the Senate for a substitute.
