LONDON: Renowned Kashmiri leader, Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl, has passed away in London after a brief illness at the age of 77.
As reported by Kashmir Media Service, Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl was admitted to a London hospital last Saturday due to severe health issues, including chest infection and kidney problems.
Widely regarded as a multitalented individual, he was an educator, author, poet, and staunch advocate for human rights.
Born on October 13, 1946, in Baramulla, part of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl received his education in Baramulla. He completed his undergraduate studies in sciences and pursued postgraduate studies in Botany at Kashmir University, specializing in ecology.

Additionally, he obtained a postgraduate degree in education from Himachal Pradesh University, India. Professor Shawl underwent various training programs at NCERT (India’s National Council of Educational Research and Training) in Delhi and SCERT (State Council for Educational Research and Training) in Jaipur, India, with a focus on curriculum development.
His professional journey commenced at St. Josephs’ Institute, Baramulla, and later extended to the government education department. Throughout his career, he made significant contributions to educational theory and practices through collaborative research projects with SCERT and UNICEF.
Notably, he played a pivotal role in developing experimental curricula, particularly in the field of environmental studies.
