ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday said that his statement regarding the country’s nuclear program was taken out of context, adding that reason behind the delay in the resumption of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program was “technical” and not strings being attached to the nuclear weapons.
In a statement, Dar said his comments regarding Pakistan’s Nuclear capability were in response to a Senator’s question, wherein he emphasized that Pakistan has the sovereign right to develop its nuclear program, which best suits our national interests.
Neither IMF nor any country asks about nuclear program: Ishaq Dar
The Finance Minister clarified that neither any country nor IMF has attached any conditionality or made any demand from Pakistan about our nuclear capability, and the delay in the IMF staff-level agreement is purely because of technical reasons, for which we are continuously engaged with the IMF staff in order to conclude the negotiations at the earliest.
Pakistan has been hosting the IMF team since early February for talks over the terms of the deal, including adopting policy measures to manage its fiscal deficit before the annual budget due around June.
