Quakes above magnitude 5 are rare in France, with the last affecting the European country in November 2019. Reports said that two people were wounded in the town of Deux-Sevres after Friday’s tremor. Officials said that several buildings including houses, and churches were affected due to the unusual quake in the region. Authorities said that the school will have to be closed as precautionary measures.

French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne termed the quake as “unusual” and expressed her solidarity with affected people. The Prime Minister said that they would obviously ensure that everybody has access to relocating. The country’s Interior Minister said the government would start an accelerated natural disaster recognition procedure to support quickly assessing the damage to buildings in the region.
