COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: The 15th match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday, was abandoned due to rain, with both teams securing one point each.
This is the second match of the tournament to be disrupted by rain, both of which took place in Colombo.
Sri Lanka’s Solid Batting Effort Was Cut Short
Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu made a smart decision by choosing to bat first after winning the toss. The team posted a strong total of 258/6 in their 50 overs.
Athapaththu led with 53 runs, while Nilakshi de Silva played a composed innings of 55* not out. Contributions from Hasini Perera (46) and Vishmi Gunaratne (28) helped set a competitive target for New Zealand.
New Zealand’s Bowlers Tried Their Best
Sophie Devine and Bree Illing were the standout bowlers for New Zealand. Devine took 3 wickets for 41 runs, and Illing contributed with 2 wickets. Despite their efforts, rain prevented the match from reaching its conclusion.
With persistent rain interrupting play and no further action possible, the match was abandoned, and both teams were awarded one point.
This result leaves Sri Lanka with 2 points in the standings, while New Zealand now has 3 points.
