COLOMBO: The skies had the final say as heavy rain forced the 19th match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 between Pakistan and New Zealand to be abandoned at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium on Saturday.
With the points shared, South Africa booked their spot in the semi-finals, joining defending champions Australia in the final four, thanks to their eight points from five games.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan were put in to bat and managed 92 for 5 in 25 overs before rain returned to cut the match short. The weather had already caused earlier delays, and the second interruption proved to be the final blow to any further play.
Aliya Riaz was the standout performer for Pakistan, remaining unbeaten on 28 off 52 balls, hitting three boundaries. Muneeba Ali added 22, while Natalia Pervaiz chipped in with 10.
For New Zealand, Lea Tahuhu led the bowling with two wickets, while Jess Kerr, Amelia Kerr, and Eden Carson picked up one each.
With just two points from five matches, Pakistan are still mathematically in the race for the semi-finals, but their path is steep. Skipper Fatima Sana and her team must win both remaining games and hope other results go their way.
New Zealand, who now have four points from four matches, remain in contention and will next take on India on Thursday in Navi Mumbai. Pakistan will face South Africa on Tuesday in Colombo, in what could be a make-or-break match for their tournament hopes.
