SRINAGAR: Rahul Gandhi, a member of the Indian parliament and a senior leader of the main opposition Congress party, is at the end of his 2,000 kilometres (1,240-mile)-long “unity march” across India.

The five-month-long march – called Bharat Jodo Yatra – started in Kanyakumari in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and finishes in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Congress MP said the march received a “great response”.

The march drew large crowds across the country and received endorsement from a number of celebrities. Analysts, however, say it is unclear if it would translate into votes.

Bharat Jodo Yatra aimed at uniting Indians against hatred: Gandhi

Gandhi said the purpose of the march was to unite Indians against hatred and fear being spread in society.

Political analysts say it is also aimed at reviving the fading spirits of the struggling Congress party which has been in free fall since 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in India.

The march concludes in a stadium in Srinagar where more than a dozen opposition leaders are expected to attend a demonstration in a show of unity.

Gandhi and Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh have said that the Bharat Jodo Yatra should not be associated with electoral politics. Ramesh recently told reporters in Rajasthan that the march was not meant to win elections.
