GAZA: In the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, evacuating wounded Palestinians and dual nationals through the Rafah crossing to Egypt has hit a roadblock. Palestinian officials reported that Israel has refused to approve the list of individuals slated for evacuation, thus keeping the crossing closed. The conflict began over a month ago when Hamas crossed into Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,400 people, primarily civilians, and the seizure of 239 hostages, according to Israeli authorities.

In response to these hostilities, Israel initiated a determined military campaign, including aerial bombardments and a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip. Unfortunately, this has led to a significant loss of life, with more than 10,500 people killed, the majority of whom are civilians, according to the Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry.

The Rafah terminal, connecting the besieged Gaza Strip to Egypt, had been reopened on November 1 to facilitate the evacuation of foreigners and dual nationals who were stranded in the war-torn region. However, it was closed for two days following Israeli strikes that targeted ambulances en route to the border, as reported by the Palestinian Red Crescent and the Hamas-run health ministry. The Israeli military stated that the ambulances were associated with a “Hamas terrorist cell.”

On Wednesday, a significant crowd of people at the Rafah crossing was seen, all hoping to access Egypt for safety. Mazen Danaf, who holds a German passport, described the dire situation in Gaza, highlighting the severe shortages of essential resources like electricity, water, and fuel, as well as the overcrowded hospitals.

Egypt had previously announced its commitment to assisting in the evacuation of around 7,000 foreigners through the Rafah crossing. The situation continues to be complex and fraught with challenges, as international efforts work to alleviate the suffering caused by this ongoing conflict.
