A group of armed forces from the UK landed in Port Sudan on Monday, Sky News reported, as the government assesses options for evacuating British nationals stranded in the conflict-ridden region. A C-17 Globemaster joined troops in what “may be part of a second rescue operation,” and the government faced criticism for evacuating diplomats on Sunday but not other citizens.

Alicia Cairns, chair of the House of Commons foreign affairs select committee, said 3,000-4,000 British nationals were still in Sudan, with more than 1,000 of them asking for help to leave.

Defense Secretary James Hippie said the UK knew the rescue of those trapped was not over and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak would be given options “as and when they arise”.

UK Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell added on Monday morning that he could not give a timeline for the rescue and “the only advice the UK can give people is to stay at home because it is the safest option”.
