Quake Shakes Indonesia’s Main Island Java, Killing One, Damaging 93 Houses

YOGYAKARTA: A strong quake shook several parts of Indonesia’s main island Java, causing panic and fear Friday as the earthquake killed one woman, wounded two others persons and damaged 93 homes.

According to the US Geological Survey the magnitude of 5.8 earthquake was centered 52 miles southwest of Bambanglipuro, Yogyakarta. It took place at a depth of 86 53 miles, AP reported.

Abdul Muhari, spokesperson of Indonesian National Disaster Management Department confirmed that a woman died when she fell during the panic. Abdul Muhari added that two people were also wounded in the area.

Abdul Muhari said that the strong earthquake also damaged at least 93 homes and other buildings like schools, hospitals, places of worship and government organizations, in Yogyakarta and Java.

Indonesia’s authorities said there was no threat of a tsunami but issued warnings of possible aftershocks in the region. The officials measured an initial magnitude of 6.4 for the earthquake.

In 2006, a magnitude 6.4 quake killed over 6,200 people and wounded 130,000 in Yogyakarta. The country is often struck by quakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions due to its location on fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In 2004, a powerful Indian Ocean earthquake set off a tsunami that killed over 230,000 people in several countries, most of them in Indonesian province of Aceh, AP reported.
