DOHA: In a fiery condemnation of Israel’s brutal actions in Gaza, Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, termed the ongoing Israeli military bombardment in the Palestinian territory as nothing short of genocide. Over 16,000 Palestinians have been killed in a massive Israeli military campaign in the besieged Gaza Strip.
During his opening speech at the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit in Doha, the Emir of Qatar described Israel’s occupation forces’ behavior as a flagrant violation of fundamental political, ethical, and humanitarian principles.
Sheikh Tamim expressed his dismay, stating, “This is a genocide committed by Israel. It is a disgrace upon the international community to allow this heinous crime to continue.” The Emir passionately decried the deliberate and systematic killing of innocent unarmed Palestinian civilians, emphasizing the severity and gravity of the crisis.
He went on to commend the resilience of the Palestinian people, praising their unwavering dedication to their cause despite the immense challenges they face. Sheikh Tamim stressed the urgent necessity for a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire to halt the continuing violence and suffering in the region.
Fear Grips Southern Gaza Amid Israeli Bombardment
Meanwhile, as fear grips southern Gaza amid Israeli bombardment, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s chief warned that Israel’s “indiscriminate bombardment” of Palestinian civilians in the region has reached “new depths.” The Israeli army, initially focusing on the north of the enclave, has now intensified attacks in the south, including near hospitals.
The United Nations has cautioned against the creation of “so-called safe zones” for civilians within the Gaza Strip, citing their impracticality amid Israel’s ongoing bombing campaign. UNICEF spokesperson James Elder emphasized, “The so-called safe zones are not scientific, they are not rational, they are not possible, and I think the authorities are aware of this.”
