DOHA: State-owned QatarEnergy said on Tuesday that it awarded a deal worth around 10 billion dollars to a joint venture of France’s Technip Energies and Consolidated Contractors Company for a landmark natural gas field.

QatarEnergy said that the worth of the procurement, engineering, and construction contract for the North Field South project is nearly 10 billion dollars, and its scope covers the construction of 2 mega liquefied natural gas trains with a combined capacity of sixteen million tonnes per year.

Technip company holds a considerable majority of the capital, a source close to the French company informed AFP.

CCC is a global-level engineering and construction company.

QatarEnergy said that the LNG trains, after further expansion of North Field East, would boost Qatar’s total production capacity from 77 to 126 million tonnes per year.

North Field East and NFS form the wider North Field Expansion project to enhance LNG production. The North Field contains the biggest natural gas reserves in the world and it extends under the Gulf into Iranian territory.

Deal a big milestone

Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Energy Minister and QatarEnergy’s chief, called the latest agreement another big milestone in the world’s biggest LNG project.

Technip said in a statement that the project included a large CO2 carbon capture and sequestration facility, leading to 25%-plus reductions of greenhouse gas emissions as compared to similar LNG facilities.

Asian nations led by China, South Korea, and Japan have been the major market for Qatar’s gas. Still, it is being increasingly hit by European countries since Russia’s aggression against Ukraine threw supplies into doubt.
