KABUL: An envoy for Qatar’s foreign affairs minister visited Kabul on Sunday and met with the acting foreign minister of the Taliban administration, the Afghan foreign ministry said in a statement.

The visit comes after the Taliban administration imposed restrictions on women’s NGO work and education, which Qatar labelled “deeply concerning” amid widespread global criticism.

Mutlaq Bin Majed Al-Qahtani, the special representative of the foreign minister of Qatar, took part in meetings with the acting foreign minister of Afghanistan, Amir Khan Muttaqi, in Kabul, Afghan foreign affairs ministry spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi.

“Both sides discussed political cooperation, the strength of the relationship, and humanitarian assistance,” Balkhi said.

Qatar is home to Taliban’s political office

No foreign country has formally recognized the Taliban government. However, both Pakistan and China sent their foreign ministers to Kabul last year, and the UN deputy special representative recently visited to discuss the rights of women and aid.

Qatar was home to the political office of the Taliban since around 2012, when they were waging war against the Western-backed government until they assume power in 2021.
