DOHA, Qatar: Qatar has reiterated its appeal to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to endorse the full membership of the State of Palestine within the UN, during the 10th emergency special session of the General Assembly.

Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered the statement, expressing pride in the General Assembly’s recent resolution recognizing Palestine’s eligibility for full UN membership.

She emphasized Qatar’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people and its belief that Palestine meets the criteria outlined in Article 4 of the UN Charter. This resolution, seen as a significant victory for Palestinians, presents a fresh opportunity for the Security Council to take a unified stance in recommending Palestine’s membership.

However, amidst these diplomatic efforts, Qatar condemned Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza, denouncing it as a flagrant violation of international law and humanitarian principles. Despite global support for Palestine’s bid, the United States and Israel, among others, voted against the resolution, while 25 countries abstained.

The resolution’s passage in the General Assembly signals a potential shift in recognizing Palestinian statehood and rights, particularly in light of the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. According to UN data, the genocidal conflict in Gaza has resulted in over 35,000 Palestinian deaths, with nearly two million civilians displaced.

The resolution’s recommendation for the Security Council to reconsider Palestine’s membership reflects growing international consensus on the need to address the Palestinian cause and ensure justice for its people.

According to the UN spokeswoman, who cited the Gaza health ministry, the fully recognized dead toll consists of 7,797 children, 4,959 women, 1,924 elderly people, and 10,006 males.
