DOHA: Qatar Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, held a phone conversation with US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, focusing on the necessity for ongoing humanitarian aid to support the people of Afghanistan.
According to a statement released by Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussion between the two leaders encompassed various topics, including bilateral cooperation, regional and international issues, and recent developments in Afghanistan.
The statement emphasized the critical importance of providing continuous humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people, particularly during the current turbulent times. Both parties recognized the urgent needs of the Afghan population and stressed the significance of meeting those needs to alleviate the suffering caused by the ongoing situation.
Qatar’s Efforts for Stability in Afghanistan
In addition to discussing humanitarian support, the Qatar Prime Minister and the US National Security Advisor explored bilateral cooperation and reiterated the strength of their strategic partnership. They also delved into several regional and global matters of mutual interest, including the Iranian nuclear deal, the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, and recent developments in Lebanon.
It is worth noting that Qatar has been actively involved in facilitating negotiations between the Taliban and the United States in Doha, which ultimately led to the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan. In May, the Qatari Prime Minister met with the Taliban supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, in the southern province of Kandahar, where they discussed various topics, including girls’ education, employment, and healthcare.
Following the Taliban’s takeover of the country, they implemented suppressive policies that restricted women from attending secondary schools, universities, and working with aid agencies. The discussions between Qatar and the United States reflect their shared commitment to addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the Afghan people and supporting efforts to alleviate the hardships they are facing.
