GENEVA: The labour minister of Qatar, Ali Bin Samikh Al-Marri, has been appointed as the head of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) annual decision-making conference without a vote.
According to the regional rotation, Asian and Pacific nations had the privilege of selecting the president of the two-week International Labour Conference this year and proposed Al-Marri. While such appointments are typically approved by acclamation.
After extensive conversations took place in recent weeks, resulting in a joint understanding that Qatar should expedite the implementation of reforms. Passchier commended Qatar for its engagement with the ILO and the international trade union movement and confirmed that the union group had accepted Al-Marri’s nomination.
Qatar Introduces Minimum Wage and Improved Conditions for Workers
Following his appointment, Al-Marri addressed the conference, highlighting that Qatar had introduced a minimum wage and improved conditions for domestic workers. He acknowledged that more work needed to be done and emphasized Qatar’s commitment to further reforms. Al-Marri also stressed the need to adapt social dialogue to the reality of the country.
