MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin will host China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi for talks in Saint Petersburg on Wednesday (today), the Kremlin said.
The top Chinese diplomat is on a four-day trip to Russia, in the latest of a series of top-level contacts between Beijing and Moscow.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists that today Putin will receive the Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, according to AFP. The Kremlin has sought to deepen relations with China after the start of its Ukraine war, which has thrown Russia into increasing isolation.
Beijing has sought to position itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine war while offering Moscow a vital diplomatic and financial lifeline. Wang called on Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday.
According to Chinese state media reports, Wang reiterated Beijing’s position paper on the Ukraine war, which called for peace negotiations but was met with skepticism by the United States (US) and NATO when it was released earlier this year.
China, Russia Tout ‘No Limit’ Partnership
China and Russia frequently tout their “no limits” partnership and economic and military cooperation.
In March, China’s President Xi Jinping made a state visit to Moscow, where he and Putin sought to showcase a united front against Western nations.
