MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has underscored the gravity of the conflict in Ukraine, describing it as a crucial struggle that holds existential significance for Russia and could shape its future trajectory.

In remarks aired on Sunday, Putin emphasized the high stakes involved in the ongoing military confrontation in Ukraine, framing it as a decisive battle with far-reaching implications for the country’s fate.

“The events unfolding on the battlefield in Ukraine are not just a matter of tactical maneuvering; they represent a fundamental issue of survival for Russia,” Putin stated in an interview with state television.

Throughout the nearly two-year conflict, the Kremlin has sought to rouse support for its military actions by portraying them as vital to Russia’s national interests and security. Putin’s remarks reflect a continued effort to rally patriotic sentiment among the Russian population and justify Moscow’s intervention in Ukraine.

Russia Aims to Shape International Perceptions

Putin’s comments come in the wake of a lengthy interview with American talk show host Tucker Carlson, during which he delved into Russian history and questioned Ukraine’s sovereignty. The Kremlin has utilized such platforms to disseminate its narrative on the conflict and shape international perceptions.

In addressing his historical reflections during the interview, Putin acknowledged the challenge of conveying Russia’s perspective to Western audiences, particularly in light of their differing historical contexts.

While Putin’s remarks may resonate with some segments of the Russian population, they have drawn criticism from Ukraine and Western countries, which view Russia’s actions in Ukraine as a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability.
