MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russian scientists were close to creating cancer vaccines that could soon be available to patients, local media reported on Thursday.

President Putin said in televised comments that “we have come very close to the creation of cancer vaccines”.

The Russian President hoped that soon the vaccine will be effectively used as methods of individual therapy. However, President Putin did not specify which types of cancer the vaccines would target.

A number of nations and firms are working on cancer vaccines. Earlier, the UK government also inked an agreement with Germany-based BioNTech to initiate clinical trials providing “personalised cancer treatments”, aiming to reach around 10,000 patients by 2030.

There are presently six licensed vaccines against HPV that cause many cancers, including cervical cancer, the World Health Organization says.

During the coronavirus outbreak, Russia had also developed its own Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 and sold it to a number of nations. President Putin said that he had also taken Sputnik, in a bid to assure people of its safety and efficacy.
